Best Time to Visit Konya

April to June: green and mild

Konya sits high on the Anatolian plateau, so spring comes late and feels fresh. April is bright and comfortable, with highs around 18°C. Mornings are still cool. May and June warm up nicely, and June is the sunniest of the three.

This is the best window for walking the old centre. You can wander from the Mevlana Museum, home of the poet Rumi's tomb, to the Alaaddin Hill and the Karatay Medrese (a tile museum in an old Seljuk school) without wilting. If you're doing a day trip to Çatalhöyük, the Neolithic site on the plains, spring is also the kindest time. The fields are green and the site has little shade.

July and August: hot, dry and quiet

Summer is hot and almost rain-free. August is the hottest month at 33°C, with July just behind. The air is dry, so it's easier to take than a humid coast. Still, midday on the open plain is harsh. Plan museums for the afternoon and save the evenings for a stroll and a plate of etli ekmek, Konya's long, thin meat flatbread.

Konya isn't a beach town, so crowds stay modest. Turkish families travel in these months, though, so book rooms near the Mevlana Museum if you're visiting then.

September to November: golden and easy

September keeps the summer light but drops the heat to 28°C, and it's one of the driest months. October is gentler still, and November is cool, grey in places, but still rated Excellent for comfort. If you like sightseeing without queues, this is a smart pick.

The big date is December, not autumn. The Mevlana commemoration, known as Şeb-i Arus ("wedding night"), runs on several evenings around 17 December. Sema ceremonies, the whirling dervish rituals, draw pilgrims and visitors from across Turkey and abroad. It's a moving thing to see, but hotels fill fast.

December to March: cold and quiet

Winter is cold, damp and short on sun. January is the coldest month, with lows of -3°C and about three hours of sun a day. Rain is spread over many days, and some mornings are frosty. Sights are easy to enter, and prices tend to be lower.

If the Sema is your main reason to come, bring a proper coat and accept the chill. If you just want a pleasant city break, wait for April.
