Best Time to Visit Nicosia

Spring: the sweet spot

March to May is when Nicosia feels easiest. March is mild, with a few showery days, so it suits a walk around the Venetian walls without breaking a sweat. By April the highs reach 23°C and rain is rare. May warms up to 28°C, and the sun feels strong by mid-afternoon.

This is the best time for a city break. You can wander the old town inside the walls, cross the Ledra Street checkpoint to the north side, and sit outside in Laiki Geitonia for lunch. Try a plate of halloumi and lountza (smoked pork) with a cold drink. Orthodox Easter is the big event, usually in April or early May. Shops close for a day or two, and families gather for lamb. Visitors are welcome, but book your table early if you want an Easter meal out.

Summer: hot and quiet

July and August are the hottest months, tied at 37°C, with almost no rain. June and September are also hot at 33°C, but they feel kinder in the evenings. Afternoons in the inland city are fierce. Plenty of locals head to the coast or the Troodos mountains, and the old town can feel sleepy at midday.

If you come now, plan your days around the heat. Museums are a good midday move. The Cyprus Museum and the Leventis Municipal Museum are both indoors and cool. Save the streets for after dark, when cafés fill up again. Hotel prices tend to be lower than on the coast, since Nicosia is more of a business and culture stop than a beach one. The nearest beaches are about an hour away by car.

Autumn and winter: mellow, then damp

October and November are great. October still reaches 28°C, with warm nights, and November cools to a comfortable 22°C. Rain returns, but it's mostly short and patchy. This is a good time for walking, café hopping and day trips to villages like Lefkara, known for its lace and silver.

December and January are the wettest months, tied at 84 mm, and grey days are common. Highs sit around 15 to 17°C. It's not freezing, but evenings feel cool and damp. Christmas lights go up around Eleftheria Square, and the city feels cosy rather than crowded. If you don't mind a brolly, it's a calm, low-cost time to visit.

February is a nice surprise. It's drier than January and rated Excellent, with fewer visitors around.
