Spring and autumn: the easy seasons

March is the first month that feels properly mild. Days reach about 19°C, nights are chilly, and rain comes on roughly one day in three. It's light rather than heavy. Gardens and hillsides around the Yangtze turn green, and it suits walking along the river without sweating.

October and November are the other sweet spot. Days are cool and comfortable, and the air feels less heavy than in summer. Skies are often hazy rather than bright blue, so don't expect sharp, sunny photos. These two months are the best choice for most trips. April and September are good backups, though April gets noticeably wetter.

Summer: hot, wet and sticky

From June to August, Yichang is hard work. Highs hit 33°C in July and August, and July also has rain on 18 days. Nights stay warm, so there's little relief after dark. August is the sunniest of the three, but it's tied with July for the hottest days.

If you come anyway, plan around the heat. Spend the middle of the day indoors, and save outdoor stops for the evening. Rain can close in fast and swell the river, which sometimes affects boat schedules. Check before you book anything on the water.

Winter: quiet and cool

December and January are cold but dry. December is the driest month, with just 16 mm of rain. Days are around 10 to 12°C and nights drop to freezing in January. It's grey more than snowy, and it's cosy rather than harsh. If you hate crowds, this is your window.

Crowds and what's on

Yichang is the gateway to the Three Gorges Dam and Yangtze cruises, so visitors cluster in spring and autumn. Chinese school holidays push numbers up in July and August. The Golden Week holiday in early October is the busiest time of year. Trains, hotels and the dam viewing areas fill quickly then. If you want October's weather without the rush, go in the last two weeks.

Spring Festival lands in January or February. Many local restaurants close for several days, though the city is calm and festive. Late May to June brings the Dragon Boat Festival. The Yangtze setting, and Qu Yuan's links to this region, make it a meaningful time to visit.
