Yichang's February days are cool, damp and often cloudy. Afternoons reach about 12°C, but mornings can feel chilly, especially beside the Yangtze. Rain falls on several days, so the riverside can feel grey rather than bright.

It's still a workable month for indoor stops and shorter outings. Visit the Three Gorges Museum or take in the city from Binjiang Park between showers. Long, exposed walks along the river are less appealing when the wind picks up, and the views from high spots can disappear into cloud.

Lunar New Year

Chinese New Year, also called Spring Festival, sometimes falls in February. The date changes each year, so the city's mood depends on when you visit. Family gatherings can make local streets quieter, while transport hubs get busy as people travel home. Some restaurants and smaller shops may close for part of the holiday.

Families who enjoy local traditions may like seeing Yichang's New Year decorations and food stalls, but keep meal plans flexible. Try Yichang's fish dishes, a local specialty, at a restaurant that's open rather than counting on every neighbourhood spot.

Crowds and costs

Away from Spring Festival, February is winter low season. You'll generally find fewer visitors than in the warmer months, and stays may cost less than during peak travel periods. Holiday dates are the exception: trains and popular routes can fill up, and some services may run less often.

For the Three Gorges Dam, check the visitor arrangements before setting out from central Yichang. The site is outside the city, and a cool, wet day can make the trip feel longer. March is warmer but wetter, so February can suit you if you'd rather trade bright skies for quieter sightseeing.
