Spring and autumn: the sweet spots

March, April, October and November are your best bets. Days are mild, nights are cool, and you can walk the Xiangyang City Wall without melting. The old wall and moat are the town's headline sight, and the stone is far more pleasant to stroll in April or October than in summer. March is cooler, with highs around 19°C. April is warmer and a bit wetter, so keep an umbrella handy.

November is crisp and fairly dry, with the most sun of the four. It suits slow days around the Hanjiang River and the Ancient Rong Town area, or a trip out to Longzhong, the area linked to the strategist Zhuge Liang, who lived there before joining the Three Kingdoms story. If you like Three Kingdoms history, this is your place.

Summer: hot, sticky and wet

June to August is tough going. Highs sit around 34°C for all three months, and nights stay warm. July is the wettest month by a clear margin, with rain on 17 days and heavy, humid afternoons. August is a little drier and sunnier, but still hot.

Can you handle heat? Then use the mornings for the wall and the evenings for the riverfront, and spend midday in a museum or over a bowl of Xiangyang beef noodles, the local breakfast favourite. Otherwise, skip these months. May and September are easier. They're still warm and showery, but you won't feel cooked.

Winter: quiet and cold

December to February is chilly, and January nights dip below freezing. It's also the driest stretch, so the rain rarely spoils a day. December is the pick of the three, with plenty of sun and little rain. Expect grey, cool days and quiet sights. Hotels are rarely stretched at this time of year.

Chinese New Year usually falls in late January or February. Many families travel home, some small restaurants close for several days, and trains get very full. The town itself can feel calm, but getting there is the hard part.

Crowds and timing

Xiangyang isn't a mass-tourism stop, so crowds are mostly domestic and tied to Chinese holidays. The May Day break and the National Day week in early October are the busiest times. Trains and hotels fill up then, even though October's weather is lovely. If you want the same mild days with more room, aim for late October or early November.
