When to go to Shiyan: a seasonal guide
Spring and autumn: the sweet spots
Shiyan sits in the hills of northwest Hubei, and it has four clear seasons. March and April are the best of spring. Days go from cool to pleasantly warm, and the hills turn green. Expect some drizzle, mostly in April. October is just as good, with mild days and cool nights. Our comfort score also rates November as Excellent, though by then it's properly chilly in the evenings.
If you want to hike Wudang Mountain, this is your window. The stone steps up to the Golden Summit are a lot easier when you're not sweating through them. Mist is common too, which makes the temples look wonderful but can hide the views. Don't count on big skies, because sunshine is modest all year.
Summer: hot, wet and sticky
June is hot, July and August are worse. July is the wettest month, with rain on 17 days, and it stays muggy even at night. Our data rates both July and August Poor. Heavy showers can make mountain paths slippery and cloud out the views.
Still, you can make it work. Wudang is cooler up high than down in the city, and the temple halls give you shelter when the rain comes. Travelling with kids? Chinese school holidays run through July and August, so the main sights get busier and hotels near Wudang cost more. Those are the weeks to skip if you hate queues.
Winter: quiet and cold
December to February is cold, with nights just below freezing. It's also dry, especially in December. Don't expect snow-globe scenes in town, but the higher parts of Wudang can feel icy and frosty. Steps may be slick, so go slowly.
This is low season. You'll find fewer people on the mountain and easier rooms. It suits you if you like moody, quiet temples and don't mind bundling up. Pair it with a bowl of hot Shiyan beef noodles or a steaming local hotpot. Both are easy to find in town.
Crowds and events
The big rushes come around Chinese holidays. Expect packed trails during the early October National Day week and around Spring Festival in late January or February. If October is your pick, aim for the weeks after the National Day crowds thin out. Spring Festival is also when temple fairs and lively visits to Wudang peak.
March and April are busy on weekends but calm midweek. For the best mix of good weather and elbow room, try mid-to-late October or early November on a weekday.
