Spring and autumn: the best stretches

March to April is when Xinyang works best for a first visit. Days warm up from cool to comfortable, and the hills around the city turn green. This is tea country. Xinyang Maojian is one of China's best-known green teas, and the first picking happens in spring, so it's a good time to visit the tea villages and plantations around Shihe District and the hills south of the city. Rain does creep up through April, so expect a few grey, drizzly days.

September to November is the other sweet spot. October is our top pick: mild days, cool nights and more sun than spring. By November it's crisp, and you'll want a jacket in the evenings. Hiking is at its best now. Jigongshan, a cool mountain retreat just south of the city, is a favourite. Its old summer villas and forest paths are far more pleasant when the air is dry and clear.

Summer: hot, wet and sticky

June to August is rated Poor, and it's fair. Highs sit around 32°C, nights stay warm, and July is the wettest month by a wide margin, with rain on 17 days. August is a little drier and sunnier, but still muggy.

If you come anyway, head up to Jigongshan, where it's cooler than in town. That's why Chinese families have escaped there in summer for generations. Plan indoor time in the afternoons, and expect downpours rather than all-day drizzle.

Winter: quiet and chilly

December and January are cold, with frosty nights. January is the coldest month, with lows of -3°C. The days are drier, though, and December is the driest month of the year. Heated indoor spaces can be patchy in this part of China, so a warm room matters more than you'd think. February is slightly milder and rated Good, but it often overlaps with Spring Festival (Chinese New Year, which moves each year). Many local shops and restaurants close for a few days, and trains fill up as people head home.

Crowds and timing

Xinyang is mostly a domestic destination, so crowds follow Chinese holidays. Expect busier trains, hotels and mountain paths during Spring Festival and National Day week, which starts on 1 October. That falls right in our best month, so aim for mid or late October instead. Spring tea season brings visitors too, but it's a calm sort of busy. If you like quiet trails, November is hard to beat.
