Spring and autumn: the sweet spots

April and October top our comfort score, and it's easy to see why. Days are mild, around 23 to 24°C, and nights are cool enough for a light jacket. March and November are rated Excellent too, though they're cooler. May and September also score Excellent. May gets warm, and September is still a bit damp.

These are the months for walking around the Three Kingdoms sites. Xuchang was the power base of Cao Cao, the warlord of that era, and the Spring and Autumn Tower (Chunqiu Lou), tied to the general Guan Yu, is the best-known stop. It's much nicer to stroll the grounds when you're not sweating through your shirt. If you're a history fan, this is your window.

Summer: hot, then properly wet

June is hot at 34°C but still fairly dry, and it's rated Fair. July is the real problem. It's tied with June for the hottest highs, and it's by far the wettest month, with rain on 16 days. August is nearly as bad. Both are rated Poor.

Expect sticky afternoons and sudden downpours that turn streets into shallow rivers. Travelling with kids? Skip July and August if you can. If you can't, plan indoor stops for the afternoons and keep your outdoor sightseeing for the morning.

Winter: cold, dry and quiet

December and January are rated Fair. Nights drop below freezing, and January is the coldest month, with a low of -4°C. Rain is rare, so skies are often dry, though the sun doesn't feel strong. February is a little warmer and rated Good.

If you hate crowds, winter is your friend. Sights are calm and you'll often have the paths to yourself. The big exception is Chinese New Year, which usually lands in late January or February. Many families travel to their hometowns then, trains and roads get packed, and some small restaurants and shops close for several days.

Crowds and timing

Xuchang isn't a heavy tourist stop, so there's no strict high season. The busiest times are Chinese public holidays, especially the early October Golden Week, when domestic travel surges across the country. That falls right in a great weather month, so it's a trade-off. For the calmest visit with good weather, aim for late October, or pick April or November.
