Cold, mostly dry days

December feels properly wintry in Xuchang. Days reach about 9°C, while nights can dip below freezing. Rain is scarce, and the sun often comes through, but short daylight leaves less time for wandering. Compared with November, it's much colder and drier.

You can still visit the Chunqiu Tower and Cao Wei Ancient City comfortably between indoor stops. The open courtyards and historic streets feel chilly after sunset, so keep evening plans close to a warm restaurant. Long outdoor strolls can be tiring in the cold.

There's no major annual festival in Xuchang that defines December. Christmas isn't a public holiday in China, though some shopping centres may put up decorations. New Year's Day falls just after December; it's a public holiday, but it doesn't turn the month into a festival season.

Families who prefer quieter visits may find December easier than the busier spring and autumn months. You'll generally encounter fewer visitors than in April or October, Xuchang's best-known travel months. Prices may also be lower, though holiday dates and hotel demand can affect them.

Make the cold work for you

Clear, dry weather suits short visits to Baling Bridge and the nearby area, where you can see sites linked with the Three Kingdoms period. It's less appealing for a full day outdoors, and the cold evenings aren't ideal for lingering by the water. Pick a few sights rather than trying to cover the whole city on foot.

For a practical warm-up, look for local Hu La Tang, a peppery Henan soup often served at breakfast. Have it before heading to Chunqiu Tower, then use a nearby indoor stop if the wind picks up. Check opening hours locally, as winter schedules can differ.
