When to go to Bozhou: a seasonal guide
Spring and autumn: the easy seasons
March to May is when Bozhou is at its best. March is cool and fresh, with jacket weather. April warms up to the mid-20s, with little rain. By May it's properly warm, and showers start to creep in, though not enough to wreck a day out.
September to November is just as good. September is still warm and a bit damp after the summer rains. October is the sweet spot: pleasant days, cool nights and only about five wet days. November turns crisp, and it's a good month for walking around the old town.
If you want the easiest trip, pick April or October. Both come out top on our comfort score.
Summer: hot, then soaked
June is hot and gets steadily stickier. July is the real test. It's the wettest month by far, with rain on 17 days, and the air feels heavy. August is a little drier but still muggy.
Bozhou sits on a flat plain, so there's little shade or breeze to help. If you come in summer, plan indoor stops for the afternoons. The Caocao Underground Passage is a good one, since it's cool below ground. Local herbal medicine is Bozhou's claim to fame, and the big traditional medicine market is a fine way to spend a rainy hour.
Winter: cold, dry and quiet
December and January are cold, with nights below freezing. They're also the driest months, and the sun comes out more than you'd expect. February is a touch milder, but it's still chilly.
Winter suits you if you hate crowds and don't mind a coat. Bozhou is famous for its baijiu, a strong grain spirit. Distillery visits, such as to the Gujing area, make sense in cold weather, and so does a bowl of hot lamb soup.
Chinese New Year usually lands in late January or February. Many shops and restaurants close for a few days, and everyone travels home. Bozhou itself gets busy with returning families, but outside visitors are few.
Crowds and timing
Bozhou isn't a big international tourist stop, so crowds are mostly domestic. The busiest spells are the national holidays: Chinese New Year, the early-May Labour Day break and the early-October Golden Week. If you want quieter streets, go in late April or mid-to-late October instead.
