October weather

October is one of Xinyang's best months for a visit. Days reach about 23°C, while evenings cool to around 12°C. The air feels much less sticky than in summer, and the hills are pleasant for walking. Rain falls on about eight days, so a wet spell can interrupt outdoor plans. Keep flexible time for Nanwan Lake or a stroll through the city.

For hikers, the trails at Jigongshan are a good fit: cooler weather makes the climbs more comfortable than in summer. After rain, though, paths can be muddy, so save a city visit for a damp day.

Holiday crowds

China's National Day holiday runs from October 1 to 7. Xinyang can get busier then, especially around popular sights such as Jigongshan and Nanwan Lake. Trains and hotels may cost more during the holiday than later in the month or in quieter months.

Outside that week, October is generally a calmer choice than the holiday rush, with comfortable weather for sightseeing. Families travelling during the school break may enjoy the milder days, but should expect more company at major attractions during the first week.

What to do and taste

Xinyang is known for Xinyang Maojian, a local green tea. Take a break at a tea shop and try it brewed fresh; it's a pleasant way to spend a cloudy afternoon. For a practical local tip, check the boat service at Nanwan Lake before setting out. Rain or changing conditions can affect a lake outing, so having a city plan as backup helps.

October is cooler and usually less rainy than September, though November is cooler still. If you're visiting after National Day, you'll get the same autumn feel with fewer holiday crowds.
