Spring and autumn: the sweet spots

March and November are our top picks. Days are mild, with highs of 19°C in March and 17°C in November. You can walk along the Yangtze waterfront or climb to the Xishan Park viewpoint without sweating through your shirt. Rain falls on about nine or ten days, but it's usually light drizzle rather than downpours.

April and October are also good. April is warmer and greener, though showers get more frequent. October is calmer and clearer than the summer months. If you want river views and easy sightseeing, aim for these four months.

Summer: hot, wet and sticky

June to September is rated Poor, and it's fair. July and August are the hottest, both with highs of 32°C, and nights stay warm. Humidity is high, and rain falls on 14 to 18 days a month. July is the wettest month, with the most rainy days too.

Wanzhou sits in the Yangtze valley, so the air feels heavy and the sky is often hazy. Afternoons are for cafés, air-conditioned malls and long hotpot dinners, not hiking. If you must come, plan indoor stops and keep evenings for the riverside, when it's cooler. Travelling with kids? Summer school holidays mean more families around, so expect busier spots.

Winter: grey but quiet

December to February is cool and damp, with lows of 2°C to 4°C. It's the driest stretch of the year, but the sun barely shows, with only about two hours a day. Wanzhou feels grey and soft, and few homes have proper heating, so indoor rooms can feel chillier than outside. That's when a bowl of local grilled fish, a Wanzhou specialty, hits the spot.

If you hate crowds, winter is your time. Tourist numbers drop, and you'll often have the riverfront and the Wanzhou Bridge area to yourself. Chinese New Year, usually in late January or February, is the exception. Many shops close, and locals travel to see family, so check what's open before you go.

Crowds and timing

China's big travel rushes are Chinese New Year and the National Day holiday in early October. Expect packed trains, busy hotels and full viewpoints then. For the easiest trip, pick March or November and avoid those holiday weeks.
