It's a good month for a day trip to Baligou, where the Taihang Mountain scenery is a welcome change from town. Rain can make paths slippery, though, so keep waterfall walks flexible. For a slower day, visit Xinxiang Museum or browse around the city centre if showers arrive.

The Mid-Autumn Festival sometimes falls in September; its date changes each year. If it does, you'll see families gathering for the holiday and mooncakes in shops. Don't assume it's always a September event: it can fall in October instead.

Travelling with kids? A mooncake shop visit can be a fun way to mark the festival, even if you're not joining a family gathering. Xinxiang isn't known for a major annual September festival, so don't build your trip around one.

If you hate crowds, visit Baligou on a weekday and avoid the October holiday rush. Ask locally about trail conditions after rain; mountain paths can get slick. In town, try Xinxiang's hui mian, a local wheat-noodle soup, for a warming meal after a damp day.
