Xinxiang is hot, humid and often showery in August. Afternoons reach 33°C, while nights stay warm at 23°C. Rain falls on 13 days, and the sky is cloudy much of the time. It's not ideal for long walks around town, but you can still visit the Xinxiang Museum or explore Erqi Memorial Hall between showers.

If you hate sticky weather, save your longer outdoor days for March, April or October. August is a better fit for shorter outings, with indoor stops to break up the day.

The trip takes you out to a mountain scenic area, where a wet afternoon can change the feel of your visit more than it does in the city. Afterward, look for Hu La Tang, a peppery Henan soup, at a local breakfast shop.
