Anyang Weather in September

Mild days, occasional rain

September feels like a welcome step down from Anyang's August heat. Afternoons can still feel warm, but evenings are cooler, and the air is less humid. Rain falls on several days, so you may need to shift plans when showers roll through.

It's a comfortable month for exploring the Yin Xu ruins and museum, where you can see the site linked to ancient Shang writing. The Anyang Chinese Character Museum also works well on a rainy afternoon. For a longer outing, the Taihang Grand Canyon near Linzhou is an option, though wet paths can make hiking less pleasant. September has less rain than August, but more than October.

Festivals and quieter streets

Mid-Autumn Festival sometimes falls in September; its date changes each year. If it does, you'll see mooncakes in shops and families gathering for the holiday. Don't count on the festival being in September every year.

Compared with the busy summer holiday period and October's National Day holiday, September is generally a quieter time to visit. You're less likely to face peak-season crowds at major sights, and stays can cost less than during the October holiday rush. It's not as dry or cool as October, though.

A good month for exploring

Families who want to visit Yin Xu without the summer heat may find September a comfortable fit. Keep a flexible plan for outdoor sights, since rain can interrupt a day among the ruins or on canyon trails.

At Yin Xu, allow time for both the archaeological site and its museum rather than treating them as one stop. The museum helps make sense of the oracle bones and ancient inscriptions you'll see discussed around the ruins. If showers arrive, spend longer indoors there, then head back outside when the weather clears.
