January is one of the easiest months to enjoy Visakhapatnam outdoors. Days feel warm, evenings stay comfortable, and rain is rare. You can stroll along the Beach Road, visit Kailasagiri, or spend time at Ramakrishna Beach without the heavy downpours that can disrupt plans in wetter months.

The sun is strong, though, and the coast can feel humid. Save longer walks for the cooler parts of the day, and don't expect January to feel like a cool hill-station break. If you want a beach day, check local sea conditions before swimming; the water isn't always safe.

Festivals and crowds

Sankranti, also celebrated as Pongal, usually falls in January. It's a major harvest festival in Andhra Pradesh, with family gatherings and festive foods. Republic Day brings official celebrations on 26 January.

If you hate crowds, avoid travelling around Sankranti, when people visit family and transport can get busy. January is part of Visakhapatnam's popular December-to-February season, so hotels may cost more than during the rainy months. It's generally busier than the quieter monsoon period, but the city isn't packed everywhere.

Travelling with kids? January's comfortable weather makes the long promenade at RK Beach easier to enjoy than in hotter months. You can also visit the INS Kursura Submarine Museum, set inside a real submarine on Beach Road.

For a local tip, pair your beach walk with a stop at a Beach Road food stall for Andhra-style murri mixture, a crunchy snack made with puffed rice. Go before the evening rush if you'd rather browse at an easy pace. The weather also suits a day trip to Borra Caves, though the drive into the Eastern Ghats takes time, so don't squeeze it between several city sights.
