Visiting Skopje in August
August heat in the city
Skopje is hot and sunny in August. Days reach 32°C, while evenings cool to around 18°C. Rain is limited, so you can usually count on dry weather for a wander through the Old Bazaar or a riverside meal near the Stone Bridge.
The heat makes long walks around the city centre tiring in the afternoon. Save the climb to Kale Fortress or a visit to the open-air parts of the Memorial House of Mother Teresa for cooler hours. Matka Canyon is a better choice for a day out, though the exposed paths can still feel hot.
Events and quieter streets
August 2 is Republic Day, a public holiday linked to the Ilinden Uprising. Some shops and services may close, so don't expect a normal weekday in the city. Skopje's main summer festival season is usually earlier, so August is not the best month for a packed events calendar.
If you hate crowds, August can suit you: many locals leave the city for holidays, and the streets may feel quieter than in busier travel months. Prices can also be gentler than during popular summer periods, but don't count on every hotel or tour costing less.
Make the heat work for you
With long, bright days, you can fit in a relaxed morning around Macedonia Square, then take a slow lunch before sightseeing resumes later. Try tavče gravče, a baked bean dish, in the Old Bazaar when you want a filling meal.
Travelling with kids? Make Matka Canyon a morning trip, then spend the hottest part of the day indoors or at a café. For a useful local tip, take a taxi to the canyon entrance rather than walking from the last bus stop in the heat; you'll save your energy for the lakeside path and boat ride.
