When to go to Skopje: a seasonal guide
Spring and early summer: easy walking weather
March is still grey and chilly, so keep it for a short city stop only. By April it's mild enough to wander the Old Bazaar (the Čaršija) without a heavy coat. May is lovely, though it has the most rainy days of the year, so expect showers that pass. June is warmer and sunnier, and it's a great month for the Vodno hill and the Matka Canyon, a short ride from the centre. You can kayak there or just hike the paths along the water.
If you like long evenings on a café terrace on Macedonia Square, June is hard to beat.
July and August: hot and quiet in the centre
These are the driest, sunniest months, and August is the hottest. Afternoons get properly hot, and the stone squares hold the heat. Locals head for Lake Ohrid or abroad, so the city can feel slower. That suits you if you don't mind a midday break in a shady courtyard or a museum.
Skopje Jazz Festival usually runs in October, but summer has its own events, including the Skopje Summer Festival with concerts and theatre. Check dates before you go, as they shift. For hiking, go early on Vodno or save it for another season.
September and October: the sweet spot
September keeps the warmth but loses the harshness. Days are pleasant, nights are cool, and the light is soft over the Vardar river. It's a good pick for a city break with day trips to Matka or the Kokino observatory site. October is cooler and a bit wetter, but still comfortable for sightseeing, and the Jazz Festival gives you evening plans.
Autumn crowds are light, so you'll often have the Kale Fortress walls mostly to yourself.
Winter: cold, damp and cheap
From November to February, expect cloudy skies, frequent rain and some frosty nights. January and December are the toughest, with only about three hours of sun a day. Snow is possible, and the air can turn smoggy on still days. Use these months if you're after museums, hearty food like tavče gravče (baked beans in a clay dish), and low prices. For skiing, head out to Mavrovo, which is a drive from the city.
If you can pick any time, go in late May, June or September.
