Summer and early autumn: the easy months
July and August are the warmest and sunniest, and August is the hottest month in the data. Afternoons are hot but not sticky, and the evenings cool off enough for a terrace dinner on Vitosha Boulevard. Rain is rare, so it's a good time for the Rila Monastery day trip or a hike up Vitosha, the mountain right above the city. At that height it's much cooler than downtown.
September and October are the sweet spot if you like walking all day. September still feels like summer without the heat. By October, the parks turn gold, and Borisova Gradina is lovely for a slow stroll. Bring a jacket for the evenings.
Spring: green but showery
April is mild and dry enough for the free walking tours and the old Roman ruins at Serdica. May and June are greener and warmer, but they're also the wettest months. May has rain on 17 days, though showers are often short. June is the wettest month overall, so keep a plan B like the National History Museum or the National Gallery.
Travelling with kids? Late May and June work well, as long as you don't mind a few wet afternoons.
Winter: cold, grey and cheap
From December to February, it's cold and gloomy, with only about three hours of sun a day. Nights drop below freezing. That's not for everyone, but it suits skiers. Vitosha has ski runs, and Borovets and Bansko are a drive away. Back in the city, you can warm up with a bowl of bean soup (*bob chorba*) or a hot rakia, the local fruit brandy.
Winter is low season for city sightseeing, so you'll have churches like Alexander Nevsky Cathedral nearly to yourself. Hotels are quieter, except around Christmas and New Year, and ski weekends get busy.
March is still chilly. Even so, it brings Baba Marta on 1 March, when people swap red-and-white woven bracelets called *martenitsi* for good luck. November is gloomy, but it's a fair choice if you want a cheap city break and don't mind fog and early dusk.
Crowds and timing
Sofia is never packed like Barcelona or Rome. Summer is the busiest time, but it still feels relaxed. For the best weather and the fewest people, aim for late September or early October.
