Sofia versus the coast

Our data covers Sofia, so that's where the numbers come from. The capital sits high up, near Vitosha mountain, and its weather is different from the Black Sea coast. Summers in Sofia are warm rather than scorching. Winters are cold, and snow is common. The coast is the place for beach days, with resorts like Sunny Beach and Golden Sands, and towns like Sozopol and Nessebar. Their season runs from about June to early September.

Seasons in Sofia

August to October is the best window. August is the hottest month at 30°C, but evenings cool off and the days are good for walking. By September and October the heat eases, and the Vitosha trails look lovely in autumn colour.

Spring is pleasant but changeable. June is the wettest month, at 91 mm, so showers are likely. They often arrive as short afternoon storms. Winter is for you if you want skiing. Bansko and Borovets are the big ski resorts, and Vitosha is close enough for a day trip from Sofia.

Holidays, crowds and high season

High season on the coast is July and August, when Bulgarian and foreign families fill the beaches. Prices rise and sunbeds are packed. If you hate crowds, go in June or September. The sea is still warm enough to swim.

Sofia is quieter in August, as many locals head to the coast. That makes it a good month for sights like Alexander Nevsky Cathedral without long waits.

Some dates change how you travel. Liberation Day on 3 March and Unification Day on 6 September are public holidays, so some shops and offices close. Orthodox Easter is a big family holiday, and it can fall in April or May. Christmas and New Year bring busy roads to the mountains. Ski resorts are most crowded then, and again in February.

Travelling with kids? Aim for late June or early September. You'll get beach weather with fewer people.
