April weather in the city

April feels hot and humid in Santo Domingo, with daytime highs around 31°C and warm nights. Rain falls on about nine days, but showers don't usually take over every day. You'll still get plenty of sunshine for exploring the Colonial Zone, including the Alcázar de Colón and the Cathedral of Santa María la Menor.

The heat can make long walks tiring by afternoon. Take breaks in shaded Plaza de España or duck into a museum, then enjoy the cooler feel of the Malecón later. April is less rainy than May, but wetter than March, so keep outdoor plans flexible. A full day on the beach isn't the best reason to stay in the city.

Easter and local life

Semana Santa, or Holy Week, sometimes falls in April. Good Friday is a public holiday in the Dominican Republic, and many locals travel to visit family or head to the coast. Expect some businesses to close or reduce hours, especially around the holiday. If your visit overlaps, enjoy a quieter Colonial Zone, but don't count on every restaurant or shop being open.

Travelling with kids? The shady paths and open spaces at Parque Mirador del Este make a good break from sightseeing, though the midday heat can be tough.

Crowds and practical tips

Outside Easter, April is generally calmer than the December-to-March high season. You may find less pressure on hotels and tours than during those popular months, while Easter travel can make transport busier and prices less predictable.

For a useful local stop, try mangú, a Dominican dish made from mashed plantains, at a café in the Colonial Zone. Then walk to the nearby Ruinas de San Francisco before the afternoon feels too sticky.
