March weather in the city

March is warm and mostly sunny, with afternoons reaching 31°C and sticky humidity. Rain is limited, but a shower can still interrupt a long walk through the Colonial Zone. You'll have good conditions for exploring the Alcázar de Colón, browsing Calle El Conde and sitting outside for dinner. The midday heat can make a full day on foot tiring, so save indoor sights for the hottest hours.

If you're here for beaches, the city itself isn't the best base for a whole beach day. Boca Chica is an easy trip, but leave time for the ride back.

Holidays and events

March has no major Santo Domingo festival that falls on a fixed date every year. Semana Santa, the week before Easter, sometimes falls in March. If it does, expect church services and a holiday feel; Good Friday is a public holiday, so some shops and attractions may close.

The city's big Carnival celebrations are usually in February, so don't count on seeing them in March. Check the dates of Semana Santa before choosing your travel week.

Crowds and local tips

March is still within the popular December-to-March travel season, so it's not the quietest month. It's generally less busy than Christmas and New Year, but holiday weeks can bring more local visitors. Prices may ease outside those weeks, though don't expect low-season rates.

Travelling with kids? The Malecón is pleasant for an evening stroll when the sun is lower. For a meal nearby, try mangú, a local dish made with mashed plantains. If rain catches you in the Colonial Zone, duck into the covered arcades along Calle El Conde instead of crossing the old streets in a downpour.
