When to go to Santo Domingo: a seasonal guide
December to March: the sweet spot
This is the dry, comfortable stretch, and it's when most visitors come. Days reach about 30°C, nights are mild, and showers are short. January to March all rate Excellent, with February and March the driest of the lot. You can wander the Zona Colonial (the old walled city) without ducking into shade every ten minutes. The Malecón, the seafront promenade, is lovely at sunset.
It's also high season, so expect fuller hotels and busier cathedrals and museums. Christmas and New Year are the priciest and most crowded weeks. Carnival runs through February, with parades along the Malecón and costumed devils called diablos cojuelos. Feb 27 is Independence Day, and the city gets lively. If you want music and crowds, this is your window.
April to June: warming up, getting wetter
April is a good middle ground. It's a bit warmer, with a few more showers, and the high-season crowds are thinning. By May the rain days jump to around 13 a month, and the air feels heavier. Rain usually comes as an afternoon downpour, so do your sightseeing in the morning. Then slip into a museum like the Alcázar de Colón after lunch.
Travelling on a budget? You'll often find better room rates now. Beach day trips to Boca Chica or Juan Dolio are still very doable. Just keep your plans loose.
July to November: hot, wet and quiet
This is the low season. July to September are the hottest months at 32°C, with humid, sticky afternoons. August and September are tied for the most rain days at 14, and October matches them. November is the wettest month overall, at 97 mm, and the cloudiest of the year's wet spell.
It's also hurricane season, which peaks in the later part of this stretch. Check forecasts before you fly, and consider travel insurance. The upside is real, though. Colonial streets are calmer, and prices are lower. If you don't mind a soaked afternoon, you can eat mangú (mashed plantain) and fried cheese for breakfast in a nearly empty café.
Summer school holidays bring some local families to the coast, so beaches near the city can be busy on weekends.
Which month for you?
Want the easiest weather? Pick February or March. Hoping for fewer people and lower prices? Try late April or early December. Don't mind rain? June is a fair compromise.
