Best Time to Visit Santiago de los Caballeros

January to April: dry and comfortable

This is the best stretch to visit. Days are warm but not heavy, and evenings cool off enough to sit outside. January to March rate Excellent, and April is still Good, though it's getting hotter. You'll get the most sunshine in February, which is a good month for walking around the centre.

Start at Parque Duarte, the main square, and the Catedral de Santiago Apóstol beside it. Then head up to the Monumento a los Héroes de la Restauración. It's a tall white tower with views over the city and the Cibao valley. Without a downpour to dodge, you can spend a whole afternoon up there and in the old gingerbread-style houses nearby.

February is also Carnival month. Santiago's version is known for its lechones, the horned, mask-wearing characters who swing inflated bladders at the crowd. The big parades fall on the Sundays of the month, and the city is at its loudest then. If you like crowds and colour, come for it. If you don't, pick a weekday in January or March.

May to October: hot and showery

It's hotter now, with highs of 32°C and 33°C in September, the warmest month. Nights stay warm too. Rain falls on 13 to 15 days in most of these months, but it often comes as an afternoon storm, not an all-day drizzle. Plan museums and long lunches for those hours. The Centro León, a good art museum, is a nice place to wait one out.

This is low season, so you'll find quieter streets and easier hotel choices. It's a fair time for a city break if you don't mind the stickiness. For hiking or day trips into the mountains, like the cooler hills around Jarabacoa, mornings are your best bet. June to August rate Fair, so expect some wet days.

November and December: the wettest stretch

November is the rainy season here, and it's the wettest month by a clear margin. Humidity is at its highest, and sun hours are low. It's the one month we'd steer you away from if you've only got a few days.

December turns the corner. Rain eases, nights cool to 20°C, and the city fills with Christmas lights. Family visits push up demand around the holidays, so expect more people on the roads to and from Santiago. Travelling with kids? December is gentler than November, and the mood is lively.
