December: deep winter

December in Rovaniemi is cold, dim and often damp. The high is around -7°C and the low around -12°C, with frequent precipitation. There's only about an hour of daylight, and little sunshine, so don't expect long views or easy sightseeing on foot. Snow and ice can make paths slippery, too.

Travelling with kids? Santa Claus Village lets you meet Santa and cross the Arctic Circle, but the cold and queues can make a visit tiring. Christmas Eve and New Year bring a festive feel, though many visitors come specifically for the holiday season.

Make the short light count

Keep your plans close together. A visit to Santa Claus Village works well in the limited daylight, and you can warm up in its cafés between outdoor stops. The village is outside the city centre, so check the local bus timetable before setting out rather than assuming you can walk there.

December's weather can make long, exposed hikes a poor fit, especially when paths are icy and daylight is scarce. If you want time outdoors, choose a guided activity that provides transport and equipment. That leaves you less exposed to the cold and less reliant on finding your way back in the dark.
