Visiting Rovaniemi in February
February cold
February is properly wintry in Rovaniemi, and you'll feel it from the first step outside. The average high is -9°C and the low is -15°C, with precipitation on 11 days. You'll get about seven and a half hours of daylight, but only around two hours of sun a day. That cold and dim light can make long days of sightseeing tiring, so plan for shorter outings.
The season does suit some things well. Snowmobile trips, reindeer visits and evenings watching for the northern lights all fit the time of year. Just don't count on clear skies for the aurora, and save long, exposed walks for a brighter day. The Ounasvaara trails are close to town, but ice and limited daylight can make them tough going.
Holidays and winter fun
Finnish school holidays are staggered across February, so some weeks bring more families to town than others. Runeberg Day falls on February 5, and Shrove Tuesday often lands in February too. Keep an eye out for laskiaispulla, a sweet bun filled with cream and jam or almond paste.
The Arctic Circle at Santa Claus Village is a popular stop, and winter activities keep demand high. February is generally busier and pricier than the quieter shoulder months, though December also draws heavy crowds. If you hate crowds, try to visit Santa Claus Village outside the middle of the day.
Make the cold work
Travelling with kids? Keep outdoor plans short and build in a warm-up at Arktikum, where the exhibits cover Arctic life and northern culture. You can reach both Arktikum and Santa Claus Village by local bus, so you don't have to spend the whole day outside.
Before you settle in at Santa Claus Village, check the bus back. It's outside the city centre, and waiting in the cold after the last convenient ride can make a fun visit feel much longer. Heading south won't solve it either, since Mariehamn and Stockholm are also rated Poor this month. If you want comfortable weather for wandering, aim for June to August, when Rovaniemi is at its best.
