Best Time to Visit Finland

Two Finlands, one calendar

Helsinki sits on the southern coast. Rovaniemi is in Lapland, right on the Arctic Circle. Their weather and their best months don't match perfectly. Helsinki is at its best in July, when it's warmest at 20°C. Rovaniemi is good from June to August, and July is also its warmest month, at 19°C.

If you want one simple answer, go in July. You get long days, open terraces in Helsinki and lakeside swims further north. In Lapland, the sun barely sets around midsummer. That's lovely, but a blackout blind helps.

Summer, winter and the shoulder months

Summer is high season. Midsummer weekend, in late June, is the big one. Finns leave the cities for their lake cabins, and many shops and restaurants close. Helsinki feels very quiet. Trains and long-distance buses fill up, so don't leave them to the last minute. Many Finns also take their long holidays in July, but tourist spots stay open.

Rovaniemi gets its second rush in winter. Families come for Santa Claus Village and the Christmas weeks, and prices and demand climb. If you want snow, husky rides or a shot at the northern lights, go between December and March. It's properly cold, so be ready for dark afternoons.

Spring and autumn are the quiet times. Autumn colour, called ruska, lights up Lapland's forests in September and is great for hiking in Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park. Helsinki's wettest month is October, at 84 mm, so expect grey, damp days then. Rovaniemi's wettest month is August, at 94 mm, but that's still a good month for walking if you pack a rain jacket.

What to avoid

Late April and early November can be awkward. Snow is melting or not yet settled, days are gloomy, and some seasonal tours pause. Helsinki is fine for museums and saunas then, like Löyly or Allas Sea Pool. Lapland is less rewarding.
