When to go to Helsinki: a seasonal guide
Summer: June to August
This is when Helsinki feels easiest. July is the warmest month, with highs around 20°C, and August is close behind. Days are long and the light lingers late. Around midsummer in June, the sun barely sets and the city goes quiet as Finns head to their lakeside cottages.
You can hop on the ferry to Suomenlinna, the sea fortress island, and picnic on the grass. Terraces fill up around Market Square and Kallio. Try the Vanha Kauppahalli (the Old Market Hall) for salmon soup. Summer is high season, so hotels cost more and the city feels busier. It's still never packed like Rome or Barcelona.
August is the wettest of the three summer months, with rain on 13 days. It's usually showers, not all-day grey. It's also when the Helsinki Festival fills the city with concerts and street events.
Spring and autumn: the shoulder months
May brings long, bright days and a mild 11°C. Parks turn green and the cafés drag their chairs outside. Vappu, the May Day party on 1 May, is a student carnival in Kaivopuisto park, with picnics and white student caps. If you want cheaper rooms and fewer tourists, May and June are a good pick.
September is still decent, with highs around 15°C and a bit of autumn colour in Esplanadi Park. By October it turns damp and dark. Rain falls on 14 days and you'll get under three hours of sun a day. April is chilly and can be slushy, so it suits you only if you're on a budget.
Winter: November to March
Winter is cold, dark and wet. December and January get barely an hour of sun a day, and the air feels damp. Snow is likely, but it doesn't always stay. November is the gloomiest month, with rain or sleet on 16 days, and it's the same in December.
So why come? December has the Christmas market on Senate Square, with glögi (hot spiced wine) in your hand. Winter is also made for sauna. Try Löyly or Allas Sea Pool, where you warm up and then jump into icy water. If you want snow and Northern Lights, you're better off going north to Lapland, though.
Travelling with kids? Aim for late June to early August. If you love cosy cafés and quiet museums, February can be good value, as long as you can handle the cold.
