April: snow and thaw

April is a changeover month in Rovaniemi, and it's a tough one to enjoy. Days reach only about 1°C, and nights can still drop to -5°C. Rain or wet snow falls on 11 days, and the thick cloud can leave the light looking flat. March is colder still, and May is milder but wetter, so April sits in the middle. The cold is what holds it back. You do get about 15 hours of daylight, though, which gives you plenty of time to explore.

Snow activities may still work early in the month, but melting can turn trails slushy or icy. If the slopes are open, Ounasvaara's ski runs are a good option. When the weather turns damp, the Arktikum museum is a handy place to warm up. Don't count on every winter activity running through the month, and check locally before you head out.

Easter and quieter days

Easter sometimes falls in April, bringing Finnish holiday traditions and a few more domestic visitors. The dates change each year, though, so the holiday may fall in March instead. There's no major annual Rovaniemi festival to plan an April trip around.

If you hate crowds, April is often calmer than the busy Christmas season, when visitors flock to Santa Claus Village. It's also outside the main summer travel period. Prices and opening times can vary, and some seasonal snow tours wind down as spring advances, so it pays to ask ahead.

Thaw-season tips

Travelling with kids? Santa Claus Village stays open year-round, so you can still meet Santa even if the snow is patchy. The Arctic Circle line runs through the village, which makes it an easy way to mark your visit.

For a local tip, ask about trail conditions before you walk around Ounasvaara. Thawing snow can hide slippery patches, especially where paths are shaded. If skiing doesn't appeal, use the extra daylight for a riverside walk near the Jätkänkynttilä bridge, then warm up with a bowl of salmon soup in town.
