Visiting Reykjavik in June
Cool days, long light
June feels cool and often damp in Reykjavík, not like a warm beach month. Highs reach 11°C, and rain falls on many days. With plenty of cloud, the long daylight doesn't guarantee sunshine.
You can spend hours exploring central Reykjavík, from Hallgrímskirkja to the Old Harbour, without rushing back before dark. Coastal walks work well when the wind and rain ease. Skip plans that depend on a sunny, warm beach day; even the long evenings can feel chilly.
If you're travelling with kids, the extra daylight makes it easier to fit in a walk and dinner without watching the clock.
National Day and summer crowds
Iceland's National Day falls on June 17. Reykjavík marks it with celebrations around the city centre, including parades and music. Expect more people downtown that day, and allow extra time if you're moving through the central streets.
June is the start of summer travel season, so Reykjavík is busier and usually pricier than in the quieter winter months. July is the most popular month overall, so June can be a little less crowded than peak summer, but it's no longer a low-season bargain. If you hate crowds, visit popular sights in the late evening, when there's still daylight.
Make the daylight work
June has about 20 hours of daylight, which gives you room to take things slowly. Walk out to Grótta lighthouse in Seltjarnarnes for a coastal view, then return to town for a bowl of lamb soup if the weather turns.
One local detail matters at Grótta: the causeway can be covered at high tide. Check the tide times before setting out, and don't cross if the water is rising. The weather can shift quickly, so keep a city plan in mind for a rainy spell; the National Museum of Iceland is a useful indoor stop.
