Visiting Reykjavik in February
February weather
February in Reykjavík feels raw and unsettled. Days reach about 2°C, while nights dip to around -2°C. Rain falls on many days, and cloud often dulls the light. You'll get roughly eight hours of daylight, but little bright sunshine.
That's not ideal for long hikes or beach time. Instead, keep plans flexible: explore the National Museum of Iceland, warm up in a café on Laugavegur, or visit the Sky Lagoon when the weather turns wet. The city's pavements can get slick, so leave extra time for walks between sights.
Midwinter events
February can bring the Winter Lights Festival, with art and light displays around Reykjavík. Its dates vary, so check whether it overlaps with your visit. Þorrablót, a midwinter Icelandic food tradition, may also be marked with special menus. You might see fermented shark and other traditional dishes; they're not for everyone.
If you hate crowds, February is usually calmer than the busy summer months. It's winter low season, so visitor numbers and accommodation prices are generally lower than in July. Festival weekends can still feel busier around central Reykjavík.
Make the most of your stay
Travelling with kids? Keep outdoor plans short and have a warm indoor stop in mind, such as the Reykjavík Maritime Museum by the old harbour.
For a practical local tip, check the forecast before walking from Harpa to Hallgrímskirkja. Wind and rain can make that central route feel much longer than it looks on a map. If the weather is rough, take a Strætó city bus instead, then enjoy the church tower view if visibility improves. Don't count on clear skies for distant views; February is often cloudy.
