Visiting Porto in June
June weather in Porto
June is warm and mostly sunny, with highs around 22°C and cooler evenings near 15°C. Rain is limited, but it can still interrupt a walk, so keep a café stop in mind when exploring the steep lanes around Ribeira. Long daylight gives you time for a riverside stroll and a visit to the gardens at Palácio de Cristal.
You can comfortably sightsee on foot, take a boat along the Douro, or spend an afternoon at Foz do Douro. The Atlantic is chilly, so beach days are better for a walk than a long swim. July is warmer and much drier; June's occasional showers are a trade-off for milder sightseeing weather.
São João and summer crowds
Porto's biggest June event is São João, celebrated on the night of June 23. The streets fill with music, dancing and people tapping each other with soft plastic hammers. Fireworks light up the river near midnight. Expect a lively, packed centre around Ribeira and Baixa, and book a place to sleep well before the festival.
Families who want quieter evenings may prefer the first part of June, before São João crowds gather. Overall, June is busier and often pricier than spring, as summer visitors arrive. It's still usually less intense than the peak of July and August, except around the festival.
A useful local tip
For São João fireworks, Gaia's riverfront offers a clear view across the Douro, but it gets crowded too. Arrive before the evening rush and expect a slow walk back over the Dom Luís I Bridge. If you'd rather avoid the crush, watch from a quieter spot away from the main Ribeira gathering.
Try grilled sardines from a street stall during the festival. Their smoky smell is part of the night, and you won't need to sit down for a long meal.
