Visiting Porto in November

November feels like

Porto is cool, damp and often cloudy in November, so you should expect rain on many days. Highs reach about 16°C and lows drop to 11°C. It's a little wetter than October, and the short daylight can make afternoons feel brief. If you have the choice, May to September is the best stretch to visit, but November still works if you pack for the weather.

With that in mind, plan around the indoors. You can still see Livraria Lello, the Palácio da Bolsa and the port wine lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia. Between showers, stroll the Ribeira lanes or watch the Douro from the Dom Luís I Bridge. Long beach days at Foz do Douro are less appealing now, and muddy paths make a big hike a poor bet.

Chestnuts and quiet streets

The mood lifts a little with the season's traditions. São Martinho, celebrated around November 11, brings roasted chestnuts and new wine, and you'll spot these seasonal treats at bakeries and markets around Porto. Keep in mind that All Saints' Day falls on November 1, a public holiday, so some businesses may be closed that day.

Once the holidays pass, the city feels calmer. Visitor numbers are usually lower than in the busy summer months, and accommodation can cost less. Porto still has visitors, but you're more likely to find breathing room around the Clérigos Tower and in Ribeira than you would at the height of summer. Budget travellers, in particular, may find November a quieter time to explore without the summer crowds.

A rainy-day plan

Rain doesn't have to spoil a city break. When the weather allows, take the historic tram along the river towards Foz, then duck into a café in Cedofeita if showers roll in. For a cosy meal, try caldo verde, a Portuguese soup, or a francesinha, Porto's rich sandwich layered with meat and covered in sauce.

Bring an umbrella for the steep, slippery streets around Sé Cathedral. If you're heading to the Dom Luís I Bridge, take the lower deck for river views, especially when the upper walkway feels too exposed to wind and rain.
