February's feel

February in Porto is cool, damp and often cloudy. Days reach around 14°C, while evenings fall to about 8°C. Rain comes on 11 days, so you may get a shower between sightseeing stops. The Douro's waterfront can feel chilly, but the city's cafés make good places to pause.

You can still explore the tiled São Bento station, browse the shops around Rua de Santa Catarina, or visit the port wine lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia. Rain can make Ribeira's steep cobbled lanes slippery, so take your time there. Beach days and long riverfront picnics are less dependable than in summer.

Events and quieter streets

Carnival sometimes falls in February, though its timing changes each year. Fantasporto, Porto's international film festival, is usually held in late February or early March. Check its dates if films are part of your trip.

February is winter low season, so central sights are generally less crowded than during the busy summer months. Accommodation and flights can also cost less than in peak season, though prices vary. Families who prefer calmer museum visits may find this a comfortable time to explore, but rainy spells can interrupt outdoor plans.

A local tip

For a rainy afternoon, cross the Dom Luís I Bridge on its upper deck and head to Gaia's port lodges. You'll get river views between showers, then can step inside for a tasting and a look at how port wine is aged. Wear shoes with a good grip for the bridge approaches and Ribeira's slick stones. On clearer days, save the waterfront walk for a break in the clouds.
