Visiting Porto in July
July weather
July is warm, bright and usually dry in Porto. Afternoons feel sunny rather than scorching, while evenings by the Douro are cooler. Rain is uncommon, so you can spend long stretches outside without planning around showers.
It's a good month for wandering Ribeira, taking a boat trip or heading west to the beaches at Foz do Douro. The hills and cobbled streets can feel tiring in the afternoon heat, though. Save a steep climb to Clérigos Tower for a cooler part of the day, and don't expect much shade along the riverfront.
Festivals and crowds
MEO Marés Vivas, a summer music festival in nearby Vila Nova de Gaia, is usually held in July. Its dates vary, so check the festival schedule if you want to catch a show. Porto's biggest street party, São João, takes place in June, not July.
Summer holidays bring more visitors to Porto. Ribeira, the Dom Luís I Bridge and popular sights can feel busy, and rooms and flights often cost more than in quieter months. July isn't the cheapest time for a city break, but it's generally less rainy than June.
Families who prefer outdoor days will find plenty to do, but the busiest sights may test younger travellers' patience.
A local tip
For an easier beach outing, take the historic tram from Ribeira towards Foz. It follows the river to the Atlantic, so you can enjoy the route as part of the trip. The tram can be crowded in summer; if you'd rather walk, follow the riverside path and stop at the gardens near Passeio Alegre.
For a break from the sun, duck into São Bento station to see its famous tile panels, then find a shady café nearby. Try a pastel de nata with your coffee, or cross to Gaia for a view back across the water.
