Visiting Port of Spain in March
March weather
March feels hot and humid in Port of Spain, with warm nights and showers on some days. It's a good month for city sights like the Queen's Park Savannah and the Magnificent Seven, especially when clouds soften the sun. Rain can interrupt outdoor plans, so leave room to swap a long walk for the National Museum and Art Gallery.
The hills of the Botanic Gardens are pleasant to explore, but paths may be wet after a shower. Beach time is possible, though Port of Spain itself isn't a beach town; Maracas Bay makes a popular day trip along the North Coast Road.
Events and crowds
Trinidad Carnival can fall in March, depending on the year. If it does, expect steelpan, calypso and costumed bands to fill the city before Lent. The celebrations draw big crowds and push up hotel prices, so quieter sightseeing can be harder. Phagwa, the Hindu spring festival, may also take place in March; its date changes each year.
If you hate crowds, choose a March without Carnival. It's still within the popular February-to-April travel season, so it may feel busier and cost more than the wetter months, but it's generally calmer than Carnival week.
Make the most of your visit
A useful local tip: take the North Coast Road to Maracas Bay for bake and shark, a fried shark sandwich served with sauces. The winding drive is part of the outing, and showers can make the road slower, so don't squeeze the trip between tight plans.
Travelling with kids? The Savannah gives them space to run, while the nearby Emperor Valley Zoo offers an easy change of pace. March's heat can feel sticky by afternoon, so keep the most exposed sightseeing short and spend a rainy spell in a museum or café around Woodbrook.
