Visiting Fort-de-France in March
March: warm and mostly settled
March feels warm from morning to evening, with highs around 27°C and little change after dark. Rain falls on 12 days, but the monthly total is modest, so showers are usually a passing interruption rather than a washout. You'll get plenty of sunshine for walking around La Savane, visiting the Schoelcher Library or taking a ferry across the bay.
The humidity can make long walks through the centre feel sticky, especially around midday. Save indoor sights, such as the library, for the hottest part of the day. Beach time works well, too, though Fort-de-France itself is more of a port city than a beach base.
Events and crowds
March is part of Martinique's busy high season, which runs through the cooler, drier months. Expect more visitors than in the wetter summer months, and accommodation can cost more than during the low season. The city still feels manageable, but popular ferries and central spots can be livelier.
Carnival dates change each year. If Shrove Tuesday and the main Carnival parades fall in March, expect colourful street celebrations and bigger crowds in Fort-de-France. If you hate crowds, check the Carnival calendar before choosing your travel dates.
Make the most of the bay
A practical way to escape the warm city streets is to take the ferry from Fort-de-France to Les Trois-Îlets. You'll cross the bay without needing a car, and can pair the ride with a visit to the La Pagerie Museum, linked to Joséphine Bonaparte.
Back in town, look for accras de morue, crisp salt-cod fritters often served as a snack. March is also a good time for sightseeing before April brings more rain. Don't plan a whole day around exposed walking routes if showers are forecast; the Schoelcher Library gives you a striking indoor stop nearby.
