December weather

December in Port of Spain stays warm, but it's often damp and sticky. Rain falls on many days, with cloudy spells and about five hours of sun a day. November is wetter; January is drier, though neither is as dry as the best months, February to April.

You can still explore the city between showers. Visit the National Museum and Art Gallery, or stroll around Queen's Park Savannah when the weather clears. Long outdoor outings are less dependable, and rain can make the North Coast Road drive to Maracas Bay slower. Keep beach plans flexible.

Christmas in the city

December brings Christmas lights, parang music and seasonal treats such as pastelles and sorrel. Parang is lively folk music often played at Christmas gatherings. You'll also find public holidays on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, with New Year celebrations later in the month.

Port of Spain can feel busier around Christmas and New Year, and airfares or hotel rates may rise for the holiday period. It's still generally less crowded than Carnival season, when the city fills with visitors in February. For a quieter, drier city break, January improves on December, while February to April are the better-weather months.

If you're heading to Maracas Bay, ask locally about road conditions after heavy rain before setting out. The North Coast Road is winding, and wet weather can make the trip less comfortable. When the sky turns grey, stay in town and try a Christmas pastelle instead.
