Visiting Port of Spain in February
February weather
February feels hot and humid in Port of Spain, with warm evenings and some showers. Rain falls on 13 days, but there's still plenty of sun for the Queen's Park Savannah, the National Museum and a drive up to Lady Chancellor Hill for city views. Keep outdoor sightseeing flexible: a shower can interrupt a walk, and the sticky afternoon heat makes long climbs less pleasant.
Beach time is possible, but Port of Spain isn't a beach town. For a swim, head to Maracas Bay; the winding North Coast Road makes the trip part of the outing. Save a long hike for a cooler part of the day, and don't count on a completely dry visit.
Carnival and crowds
Carnival is the big February draw when its dates fall in the month. Port of Spain fills with music, costume bands and events such as Panorama, the steelpan competition. The main Carnival days are Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, so Carnival can also fall in March.
If you hate crowds, check the Carnival dates before choosing your stay. When the festival lands in February, central streets get packed and accommodation prices rise compared with quieter months. Outside Carnival, February is still a popular time to visit, but it's usually easier to move around.
Make the most of your visit
Travelling with kids? The Savannah is a good place for a relaxed break, with space to walk and watch local life. Try doubles from a street vendor: curried chickpeas tucked into soft bara bread. It's a Trinidad favourite, often eaten for breakfast or as a snack.
If you're going to Carnival, use the Queen's Park Savannah as your landmark. Many events and parade activity centre on or near it, but road closures can make short trips slow. Ask your hotel which nearby streets are open before setting out.
