Visiting Ngerulmud in January
January: warm and very wet
January in Ngerulmud is warm, with little change between day and night. But rain falls on 25 days, and high humidity and thick cloud mean sunshine is limited, so the day can feel sticky and dim. Showers may interrupt outdoor plans, so don't count on long, dry stretches. That's why January rates just 3.8/10 here. If you can choose your month, March is the best time to visit, and the weather is much kinder then.
If you're going in January anyway, you can still see the Palau National Capitol, whose pale buildings stand out against Babeldaob's green hills. Keep your plans loose, though. Heavy rain can make a long walk unpleasant, and muddy trails are best avoided. A short drive around Melekeok is an easier way to see the area between showers.
Quiet streets, few January events
Don't come expecting a festival. Ngerulmud has no major January event that draws visitors the way Palau's Independence Day does later in the year. New Year brings a public holiday, but the capital is a small government centre, not a party hub.
That quiet suits some travellers. If you hate crowds, January will likely feel calmer than Palau's drier travel months, and visits to the Capitol and nearby villages can feel unhurried. Wet-season demand may also mean better value for stays. Ngerulmud has few places to stay, though, so most visitors base themselves in Koror, where prices can vary.
Make the Capitol a stop, not a whole day
Travelling with kids? Pair the Capitol with a drive along the Compact Road, which circles Babeldaob and links its villages. If rain cuts a walk short, you'll still have plenty to do.
From Koror, the road trip to Ngerulmud takes you across the bridge to Babeldaob. Check locally before you set out, since the Capitol is a government site and public access may be limited. Afterward, try a Palauan meal in Koror rather than expecting many dining options in Ngerulmud.
