October: rain shapes the day

October feels warm and damp, with little change between daytime and nighttime. Rain falls on many days, and heavy cloud often dims the light. You'll get some sun, but don't count on a clear afternoon.

The weather can interrupt outdoor plans, so keep visits to the Capitol complex flexible. If you're driving Babeldaob's Compact Road, allow extra time when rain makes the road slick. Save the Ngardmau Waterfall trail for a drier spell; muddy paths can make the walk harder. There's less appeal in planning a full beach day around October skies.

Holiday and quieter streets

Palau celebrates Independence Day on October 1. The main public celebrations are generally in Koror, not Ngerulmud, so check locally if you're hoping to catch an event. Government offices may close for the holiday.

If you hate crowds, October is a quieter time to see Ngerulmud than the busier, drier months. The rainy season tends to bring fewer visitors, and you may find better hotel or flight offers than in peak season. Deals aren't guaranteed, though, and services around the capital are limited.

Make the capital part of a road trip

Ngerulmud is small and spread out, so it works best as a stop on a Babeldaob drive rather than a full day on foot. Visit the striking Capitol buildings, then continue along Compact Road to other sights when the weather allows. Don't expect much choice for meals in the capital; plan your main meal in Koror, perhaps with Palauan taro and fish.

Travelling with kids? Build in a dry-weather backup, since rain can quickly change plans. October is manageable if you stay flexible, but March is a better bet for more comfortable sightseeing.
