Visiting Cebu City in January
January weather in Cebu City
January is warm, sticky and often cloudy. Highs reach 28°C, and nights stay mild at 24°C. Rain falls on many days, so you may get a sudden shower between visits. December is wetter, while February is drier; March and April are better months overall.
You can still visit Magellan's Cross, the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño and the museums around downtown. Build in time for rain, and don't count on long, clear beach days. The cloud and humidity can make a steep walk up to Tops Lookout feel tiring, too.
Sinulog and local life
January's big event is Sinulog, a festival honouring the Santo Niño. Its main celebration falls on the third Sunday of the month, with street dancing, music and religious events around the city. The Basilica and downtown streets draw large crowds, and road closures can disrupt ordinary trips.
For families, Sinulog's dancing is exciting, but the packed streets may be a lot for young children. Visit the Basilica on a quieter day if you want more time to look around.
Crowds, costs and a local tip
Cebu City is busy around Sinulog, and rooms and transport can cost more then than in quieter months. Outside the festival, January still brings holiday visitors, but it isn't equally crowded every day. If you prefer calmer city visits, February is usually a better bet for drier weather, too.
If your trip overlaps Sinulog, don't rely on a taxi to cross downtown near parade routes. Ask your hotel about closures before heading to the Basilica or Magellan's Cross, and leave extra time for getting around. After sightseeing, try puso—rice steamed in woven coconut leaves—with barbecue in the Larsian food area.
