January weather

January stays warm, but it often feels damp and overcast. Highs reach 28°C and lows stay near 26°C, with humid air and little sunshine. Rain falls on many days, so expect showers to interrupt outdoor plans.

You can still visit Fort Pilar, browse the stalls at Canelar Barter Trade Center or enjoy a bowl of curacha when the rain lets up. Keep Santa Cruz Island flexible: boat trips and time on the beach are less reliable in unsettled weather. February and March are better choices if you want more dependable sunshine.

What to do

Plan a mix of indoor stops and short outings. Fort Pilar's museum gives you somewhere to duck in during a shower, while Paseo del Mar works well when skies clear for a waterfront walk and dinner.

Travelling with kids? Pasonanca Park has open space, but muddy paths can make a wet day less fun. A practical local tip: ask about sea conditions before heading to the Santa Cruz Island boat station, rather than treating the trip as a fixed part of your day.

Holidays and crowds

New Year's Day can bring holiday closures and busy travel, especially around the start of the month. Zamboanga's biggest city fiesta, La Hermosa, takes place in October, not January, so you won't find that festival crowd now.

Early January may still feel busy after the holiday rush, and fares or room rates can be higher around New Year than later in the month. Once the holiday passes, things often ease. If you hate crowds, choose dates later in January and keep your plans loose on rainy days.
