What to do between showers

Rainfall eases after January, but February is still much wetter than March. Expect sticky afternoons and limited sunshine, rather than reliable beach or hiking weather. Save outdoor visits to Lusaka National Park for a clearer spell, and avoid counting on a full day outdoors.

Valentine's Day is observed, but it isn't a public holiday. There isn't a major fixed national festival in Lusaka this month, so you're unlikely to plan a trip around a big city event. For local flavour, try nshima, a maize meal often served with relish, at a restaurant in town.

Quieter, often cheaper

February falls in the rainy, low season. Lusaka is generally less busy than during the drier months, and accommodation can cost less than in the popular April-to-August period. The trade-off is weather that can disrupt travel and outdoor plans.

A useful local tip: after heavy rain, allow extra time for journeys across the city, especially on roads around the low-lying parts of Kanyama. For an easy indoor stop, the Lusaka National Museum is a better bet than trying to fit several outdoor sights into a wet afternoon.
