Visiting Lusaka in January
January is wet and cloudy
January in Lusaka feels warm, humid and often damp. Highs reach 25°C, but rain falls on 25 days, and there's little sunshine between the clouds. Showers can interrupt plans and make roads slow or muddy, so leave room to change your route.
You can still visit the Lusaka National Museum or take a relaxed meal in the Kabulonga area. Save long drives outside the city for a drier month if you don't want rain to shape the day. January isn't a great choice for hiking or wildlife viewing.
New Year, quieter streets
New Year's Day is a public holiday in Zambia. Many businesses may close or keep shorter hours, so check locally before making a special trip. There isn't a major January festival in Lusaka that draws visitors in the way some later-year events do.
If you hate crowds, January can suit you. It's generally quieter than the drier April-to-August period, and stays may cost less than in those more popular months. The trade-off is wet weather and fewer easy outdoor plans.
Make the rain work for you
Travelling with kids? Keep a museum visit or a long lunch in Kabulonga as a backup for rainy afternoons. For a local meal, order nshima, a maize dish served with relish, at a restaurant rather than relying on an outdoor plan.
A practical Lusaka tip: after heavy rain, ask your hotel about road conditions before heading to Lusaka National Park. It's outside the city centre, and wet roads can make the journey less straightforward. January can be enjoyable if you keep plans flexible, but April to August is a better bet for reliable sightseeing weather.
