Best Time to Visit Zambia

Dry season is the sweet spot

Zambia has three seasons. From May to August it's cool and dry. September to November is hot and dry. Then the rains come, roughly November to April. Our data for Lusaka, the capital, backs this up: April to August is the best stretch.

In Lusaka, those cool months mean pleasant days and chilly nights. It's good weather for wandering the markets or taking a day trip. Skies are mostly clear, and the dust hasn't built up yet.

Heat, then rain

October is the hottest month in Lusaka, at 34°C. Afternoons feel heavy and the air is dry and dusty. If you're on safari, though, this is a good time. Animals crowd around the shrinking water, so they're easier to spot.

January is the wettest month, with 239 mm of rain. Expect big downpours, often in the afternoon, and plenty of green. Some dirt roads in the national parks turn to mud, and a few safari camps close. Victoria Falls is at its mightiest from about February to May. You'll get soaked at the viewpoints, and the spray can hide the view. Later in the dry season, the water drops and you can swim in Devil's Pool, a rock pool at the edge of the falls, on the Zambian side.

Holidays, events and crowds

High season for safaris runs from about June to October. South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi are at their best then, and lodges cost more and fill up. If you hate crowds, try May or November. You'll see fewer people, and the bush is still good.

Some dates matter for travel. Independence Day is 24 October, and Heroes' and Unity Days fall in early July. Buses and roads get busier around them. The Kuomboka ceremony in Western Province, where the Lozi king moves by boat to higher ground, usually happens when the floods peak, around March or April.

Lusaka itself is fine all year. Just keep your trips outside the city for the dry months.
