May: crisp and mostly dry

May brings bright days and cold nights to La Paz. Afternoons reach around 15°C, but temperatures can drop to 1°C after dark. Rain is limited, so it's a good month for walking around the historic centre or riding Mi Teleférico for views across the city.

You'll get about seven and a half hours of sun each day. That works well for outdoor sightseeing, but don't expect warm evenings on a terrace. Pack a warm layer for the ride back from El Alto, where the altitude and open air can make the cold feel sharper.

Holidays and local life

May Day, on May 1, is a public holiday in Bolivia. Some shops and services may close, so check locally before counting on a particular stop. Bolivia also marks Mother's Day on May 27, a date linked to the women who fought at Cochabamba's Coronilla Hill. It's more a family occasion than a major La Paz street festival.

Travelling with kids? A ride on Mi Teleférico is an easy way to see the city without spending the whole day climbing its steep streets.

Quieter streets, good value

May is outside the busiest winter travel period, so La Paz is generally calmer than in the peak months of June to August. You may find better value on rooms and tours, though prices vary by operator. The weather is also drier than April, with less rain and more comfortable conditions for a city break.

For a practical stop, take the red cable-car line to El Alto and visit the Witches' Market around Calle Linares before it gets cold. You'll find stalls selling local remedies and ritual goods; ask before photographing sellers or their displays.
