June: crisp, bright days

June feels like winter in La Paz: sunny afternoons, cold mornings and nights near freezing. The high is around 15°C, and rain is rare, with about two wet days. Clearer skies make it a good month for wandering the Witches' Market, riding the Mi Teleférico cable cars and taking in views from El Alto.

The thin air can make steep walks feel harder, so take your time around the city's hills. The sun is strong at this altitude, even when the air feels cold. Pack for chilly evenings, especially if you're heading out after sunset.

Solstice celebrations

June 21 is Andean New Year, known as Willka Kuti or Aymara New Year. Many visitors travel to Tiwanaku for sunrise ceremonies, where crowds gather at the ancient ruins outside La Paz. It's a memorable local event, but the early start and cold wait aren't for everyone.

If you hate crowds, enjoy the city's cable-car views instead and leave Tiwanaku for another day. La Paz also marks San Juan on June 23, traditionally with bonfires, though fires have faced restrictions because of pollution.

June is part of the dry-season travel window, so La Paz draws visitors for clear skies and cultural events. It's generally calmer than the busier July and August period, though Tiwanaku gets packed around the solstice. Prices can rise for that event; other June days are often less pressured.
