Visiting La Paz in February
February feels wet and cool
February is one of La Paz's rainiest months. Showers fall on many days, and thick cloud often hides the mountain views. You'll feel cool air at this high-altitude city, especially when rain sets in. January is a little warmer and wetter; March is just as cool but drier.
You can still explore indoor sights such as the Coca Museum or take Mi Teleférico between neighbourhoods when the skies clear. Rain can make trails slippery, so skip exposed hikes around the city on wet days. The Valle de la Luna's clay paths are best saved for a dry spell.
Carnival and local traditions
February often brings Carnival celebrations, though dates change each year. In La Paz, Carnival Tuesday is marked by ch'alla, a blessing ritual where people sprinkle drinks and make offerings for good fortune. You may see it in homes, shops and workplaces.
The Alasitas fair, known for miniature goods, usually begins in January and can continue into February. Ask locally if stalls are still open during your visit. If you hate crowds, avoid the busiest Carnival events and explore quieter corners of Sopocachi instead.
A quieter, rainy-season visit
February is part of the rainy season and falls outside La Paz's best-weather stretch, which runs from April to November. You're likely to find fewer visitors than in the drier months, and accommodation can be less expensive. Still, don't expect clear skies for a full sightseeing day.
Travelling with kids? Keep a rainy-day stop in mind, such as the Witches' Market near San Francisco Church. Its stalls sell herbs and ritual items, and the nearby streets can get slick after showers. Check the forecast before walking between the market and Plaza Murillo.
