June is dry, bright and cool, with afternoons around 17°C and nights near 6°C. Rain is rare, so you can explore the stone lanes of San Blas or visit Sacsayhuamán without often losing time to showers. The strong sun can make afternoons feel warmer than the air suggests, but evenings turn chilly quickly.

The dry weather suits day hikes and trips into the Sacred Valley. Still, Cusco sits high above sea level, so a steep climb can feel harder than expected. Give yourself a gentler first day, and don't plan a tough hike straight after arriving. Families with young children may prefer wandering the historic centre before tackling Sacsayhuamán's steep paths.

Festivals and crowds

June is one of Cusco's busiest months. Inti Raymi, held on June 24, draws large crowds for performances at Qorikancha, the Plaza de Armas and Sacsayhuamán. Corpus Christi is another important celebration, with processions and religious images carried through the centre; its date changes each year.

Expect more visitors and higher hotel prices than in quieter months such as February or March. The trade-off is a packed cultural calendar and reliable sightseeing weather. If you'd rather have calmer lanes and easier access to popular sites, June may feel crowded, especially around festival events.

A useful local tip

For Inti Raymi, Sacsayhuamán is the main outdoor stage, but the site is exposed and the event lasts for hours. Arrive with time to find your entrance and seat, and keep something warm for the wait. You'll also be spending time at altitude, so don't treat the event day as a good time for a strenuous trek.

For a quieter outing, take the short walk from the centre to the San Pedro Market and try a bowl of chairo, a local potato and meat soup. It's a cosy choice after a cool evening stroll.
